Treasure Case: 2011 T651 Tendring District, Essex: Post Medieval pin
Circumstances of discovery: Whilst searching with a metal detector
Date: Post Medieval - 16th Century
Description: Incomplete early Post Medieval silver-gilt pin with filigree decoration. Only the spherical head remains, the shaft is missing. The head is hollow, with a circular hole in the base for the pin shaft. The head is decorated with six large filigree rings; three above a circumferential ridge around the midline and three below. These rings above and below the circumferential ridge are arranged so that each lower ring is set in the space between the two above. Inside each ring there is a smaller ring in the centre. At the peak of the head there is a small a spherical knop. In between each of the large rings there is a smaller ring abutting the circumferential ridge. A large proportion of gilding remains.
Diameter: 8.8mm Weight: 0.89grams.
The object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal and is over 300 years old. Consequently it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.
