A copper-alloy strap-end of probable medieval date. The strap-end consists of two joined elements. The upper piece has a plain trapezoidal plate at the top and a zoomorphic head terminal at the bottom below in incurved waist. The top side of the plate is horizontal and the long sides are also straight, converging towards the bottom, where they extend into the waist. The detail on the zoomorphic head below is executed in high relief, with a series of oblique ridges and grooves in the upper surface representing the ears, eyes and nostrils. The second piece of the strap-end consists of a thin trapezoidal back plate, attached to the back of the upper plate by means of two rivets, both extant. The edges of the upper plate have been folded round; this, in conjunction with the addition of the back plate, creates a strap slot. The patinations of the two pieces vary slightly, perhaps indicating differences in metallic composition. The main plate is a darker grey colour, the rivets, different again, are green.
This strap-end can be classified as a Thomas Class I, the suggested date range for which is late 11th or 12th century (Geake 2001: ill. 11).
