A misshapen fragment of a Medieval to post-Medieval cast copper-alloy purse bar (c. 1475-c. 1550 AD).
The fragment comprises one arm of a purse bar. It is broadly circular in cross-section with a diameter of 7.6mm. One end it has the remains of an animal head which was integral with the missing central block. At the opposite end there is a cylindrical shaft that accommodated the missing separate terminal. The shaft is 9.7mm in length and has a diameter of 3.1mm. On the underside of the arm there is an attachment plate, 21.6mm in length and 3.8mm in width with two circular attachment holes that are 1.4mm in diameter. It has a lattice-pattern of grooves that are filled in places with decayed niello.

66.3 x 11.1 x 7.6mm. Weight: 19.89g.

This purse bar is corroded and has patches of a shiny dark green patina. The break is old.

The purse bar is of Ward Perkins Type A1 (1940:164), dated c. 1475-1550 AD (p.160).
