A copper-alloy pin of early post-Medieval date.
The weight of the artefact indicates that the globular head is probably of hollow construction. The surface of each hemisphere is decorated with a pattern comprised of three applied ropework circles, the interior of each circle occupied by three smaller circles and a central pellet. In addition, the angle formed between the bottoms of adjoining large circles contains a single ring. There is also a median ropework band which marks the junction of the two hemispheres. A circular-sectioned projection at the top of the head may represent the upper part of the separately cast shaft, which is bent, corroded and incomplete. The pin measures 44.9mm long, 13mm wide (diameter of head) and weighs 2.4g.
The form and decoration of this pin are typical of the 16th century. Several similar pins in gilt-silver have gone through the treasure process (see Treasure Annual Report 2005/6: no. 791).
