Cast silver hanging-bowl escutcheon of trapezoidal shape with an animal head protruding and bending over to form the hanging loop from the wider top. A flat median ridge runs along the back of the animal's head and neck and on either side has a series of diagonal strokes simulating a mane. The line continues down to form a median ridge dividing the main panel into two fields. The base ends in a straight edge and the main fields enclose a tight Celto-Saxon knotwork of 7th - 8th century style.
There is no obvious parallel to the interlaced relief decoration on this escutcheon. The closest parallel to the form and decoration is found on the riveted silver escutcheons from the 8th-century St Ninian's Isle bowl (Bruce-Mitford 2005, no. 114) and it is likely to be of the same date.
Notes:
This object was found in 2006 but thought to be made from copper alloy and so not identified as potential Treasure at the time. It was subsequently donated to Norwich Castle Museum and found, on cleaning, to be silver. The object fulfils the Treasure Act (1996) in that it is more than 300 years old and has a precious metal content exceeding 10%.
Fuller details will be added to this record when its study for publication is under way.
This has been noted as an interesting find by the recorder.
