WEIGHT

Unique ID: SWYOR-CB2715

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A lead alloy weight of unknown date but most likely from the Roman to Post-Medieval periods. The with is a net weight and is a cylinder which is sub circular in section with a central sub circular perforation. One side bows out slightly and the other is straighter but the object appears to be widest at the centre. The central perforation has a tapering diameter of 5mm-6.2mm. The material appears to have been rolled; there is a rough seam where the material overlaps. The weight has a creamy white and light brown patina with minor surface scrapes and dents. Due to a lack of excavated examples it is difficult to obtain a more precise date. Please also compare to examples found on PAS record IDs: BH-DCC8C1, LVPL-BA0591 and SUSS-59CD41. Other examples are recorded as net sinkers, but these weights may also have been used on land based nets such as for snaring rabbits.

Length: 23.2mm; Width: 11mm; Weight: 12.02g
