A broken and incomplete medieval cast copper-alloy dagger guard or quillon (c. 13th century AD). It consists of a curving metal strip, at its widest in the centre (8.6mm), where it is 6.4mm thick. Inside this area is a 11.6 (min.) by c. 4.9mm slot; on the lower surface it is recessed more widely to accommodate the blade. Either side, the strip narrows as it curves downwards to slightly thicker ends.
Ward Perkins (1940, 40) discusses quillon daggers and suggests that quillons that droop slightly towards the point are frequently illustrated in mid 13th-century sources. For a complete, slightly larger example see SWYOR-C960B2 on this database.
