A worn Medieval Burgundian silver double patard of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy (1467-1477 AD), probably minted in Flanders.

Notes:

In 1469, following an agreement made between Edward IV and Charles the Bold, these coins were made legal tender in England and remained so for over 60 years afterwards; they appear in hoards (in steadily declining numbers) until well into Henry VIII's reign. The Burgundian rulers were seen as friends of the English and this is the main reason that this type of foreign coin was allowed to circulate here. The metal is not quite sterling value, so although they were the same size as an English groat, they may have passed for a little less than four pence. They presumably finally disappeared during the Henrician debasements of the early 1540s.
