Cast copper-alloy Roman buckle of Hawkes and Dunning Type IIA, length 28mm, width 28mm, thickness 6mm, weight 4.5g. Two dolphins facing/confronting each other with their mouths open with an oval object held in their jaws. Ring and dot decoration for the eyes and a high pronounced crest runs down the back of both animals. The tails of both beasts curve in towards the centre of each animal and are joined by a short bar. protruding from the rear of the buckle are two loops that would hold the axis bar for the buckle plate and pin. Buckles such as these have been found during archaeological excavation and have been dated to from the late 4th to early 5th century. According to Hawkes and Dunning this is a buckle type IIa (1961, 50-55, fig 17) and are thought to be military in origin. 350-425AD
