An incomplete cast lead or lead alloy button, of Post medieval dating (18th to 19th Centuries AD).
The button is circular in plan, with raised symmetrical decoration on the front. A raised central pellet is present, with the rest of the design radiating from that. Eight diagonal rays extend from the centre, separating the button into eight segments. An open trilobed design is present in the middle of each segment. An arched tressure is present around the edge of the button.
The back of the button exhibits the design in reverse relief, suggesting that it may have been press moulded. A central circular shank is all that remains of the integally cast attachment loop.
The button measures 42.73mm in diameter and 5.67mm thick. It weighs 19.5 grams.
The button is a light to mid grey colour, with an even surface patina.
It is possible that this button may have been a decorative harness fitting, but the method of attachment seems incredibly flimsy for such a use. It is more probable that it is a button.
