A fragment of cast copper alloy, probable casting waste, of uncertain dating (2150 BC to 1700 AD). However, due to the lack of context and continuation of casting styles, this fragment could be dated from the Bronze Age through to the Post Medieval Period (c.2150 BC - 1700 AD).
The fragment is irregular in plan and cross section. It has an irregular, rough surface. It is a mid to dark green colour. An even patina covers the surface.
It measures 49.21mm in length, 40.37mm wide and 6.65mm thick. It weighs 16.1 grams.
In appearance, the fragment does display some similarities to a possible pendant of uncertain shape with a broken suspension loop, however it is probable that this is mere coincidence. It is more probable that the irregular shape is due to being cooled run offs of waste metal from the casting process, with the two thinner arms being the remnants of casting sprues.
Casting waste is very hard to date in isolation but the patina and form might suggest a Bronze Age - Post Medieval date. A direct comparison has not been found. The survival of casting waste is relatively rare as it is usually recycled swiftly as a bi-product of casting.
