Post medieval copper alloy button of 17th century date
The button is of circular, domed form (with a diameter of 27.2mm, a height of 6.8mm and a weight of 10.5g) and has broken across the perforation in the integral shank (with an overall surviving depth of 10.4mm). The button depicts the bust of a post medieval monarch in side profile, flanked on each side by a flower, all in cast relief. The king is depicted with shoulder length hair and is wearing a crown. The rear of the button is hollowed and has minimal finishing. The integral shank is of rectangular section (7.6mm wide and 2.1mm thick), with straight sides narrowing to the break across the circular perforation (2.4mm diameter). The surface has a dark green patina.

The button possibly depicts King Charles II and may be a commemorative button; it can be closely paralleled with an example recorded by Read (2005, p 48, no. 169). Read suggests the button may be to commemorate the wedding of Charles to Catherine in 1662 (ibid.).
