An incomplete cast copper alloy padlock, of Post Medieval dating (16th Century to mid 19th Centuries AD).
Only the front plate to the padlock, with a rectangular plate to cover the keyhole is present. It is circular in plan, with two protruding lugs at the top of the plate. These lugs would have originally taken the bar, which is now missing. The presence of iron corrosion products around the area of the lugs and on the reverse would suggest that the bar and central section of the padlock was originally made from iron. The rectangular plate has been decorated with three vertical incised lines. The rectangular plate has been misaligned slightly, revealing the key hole. No other decoration is present on the front of the padlock plate.
The padlock is a predominately a mid to dark green colour, with patches of dark brown / red iron corrosion products present at the top.
It measures 24.68mm in length, 21.85mm wide and 9.29mm thick. It weighs 5.3 grams.
Several similar padlocks have been recorded on the PAS database, some as models / toys of the larger versions (LVPL-DAADD7, SF-E9C4E3, CORN-BAA754, HAMP-EEC070, SF-A085B7, and YORYM-179B81). All are believed to be Post Medieval in dating, ranging in date from 16th Centuries to mid 19th Centuries AD.
