Report for H M Coroner Treasure Number: 2011 T523 Find Spot: Brandon & Bretford, Warwickshire PAS Database number: WAW-491897 Period: Medieval; 14th Century Date of Discovery: 30/8/11 Circumstances of discovery: whilst metals detecting Description: Gold annular brooch. The brooch consists of two bands and a pin. The bands have been made using sheet metal with rectangular cross sections, then looped and soldered. One band is smaller and inside the other. The inner surface of the larger band is flat and the outer surface has additional sheet metal soldered on around it with bead effect on the rim. The smaller band has moulded beading on the inner surface and a flat outer surface. Both bands have a flat surface facing each other. The bands are secured and kept in place by two hounds and a hare that have been applied by soldering onto the front of the brooch. It appears to be a scene of hounds chasing a hare. The brooch pin is hooked around the inner band at the belly of one hound and the tapered end of the pin falls on both bands on the hind of the hare. The brooch has been bent and so the end of the pin may have originally fallen between the other hound and hare. Dimensions: Diameter: 19.88mm Thickness: 2.30mm Weight: 3.0g Discussion: Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
