Iron Age copper alloy bow brooch of Colchester-one-piece type and of 1st century AD date
The brooch is incomplete, missing the spring and catch-plate and is distorted (with a distorted length of 45.0mm, a straightened length of approximately 77mm, a depth of 27.1mm and a weight of 6.1g). The missing spring would have been positioned behind wings, which are both bent against the head in opposite directions (with a distorted width for the wings of 11.8mm) and the chord was tensioned above the head with a rearward claw. The bow is of sub-rectangular section near the head (with a width of 5.2mm and a thickness of 3.1mm) and gradually thins and narrows along the bow. The sides of the bow are straight and converge towards the pointed foot and no applied decoration is discernible on the bow. The remnants of the catch-plate survive at the rear of the leg. The surface of the brooch is poorly preserved with a dark-green patina, and elsewhere has areas of brown surface loss.
