Medieval copper alloy harness pendant, probably of 13th or 14th century date
The harness pendant is incomplete, missing the loop (with a surviving length of 29.5mm and a weight of 9.4g). The pendant is square (20.7mm) with a raised knurled rim (4.3mm thick). Within the border is a saltire cross with trefoil terminals in relief. At the centre of the cross is a raised circular pellet (3.7mm diameter). The rear of the pendant is flat with a protrusion at the centre, indicating that the central pellet is a separate pin (5.8mm long). The pendant has some surface preservation with remnant traces of gilding surviving, particularly on the rear. The copper alloy has a dark-green to brown patina. Some iron corrosion is adhering to the broken loop.
The pendant form can be seen as unusual and is difficult to closely parallel in the archaeological literature, a similar example with a separate domed boss held with a central rivet has been recorded with PAS from Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan (NMWPA 2007.190.1).
