A copper alloy Roman brooch, a Trumpet derivative type dating from the 1st and 2nd Centuries. The brooch has a small trumpet head with a damaged cylindrical housing for the axis bar behind. The bar is missing but there is a slot for the missing hinged pin. On either side of the bow on the front of the head is a concave depression which may have originally contained enamel. The bow is arched and flattens out slightly in the centre where there is a circular platform with a hole through the centre. It then flares out to form the foot which is triangular like a fan tail brooch. On the foot are three more concave depressions like the ones on the head. There is one centrally at the top and two at the end of the foot, one on each side. The catchplate on the reverse tapers from the foot, ending approximately half way up the body; its edges are slightly worn with some minor damage and the turn over is missing. The brooch has a dark green patina and is worn. It has been coated with a preservative. Compare Hattatt, page 330, figure 189 number 1537 which is a very similar but better preserved brooch.
