PILGRIM BADGE

Unique ID: LANCUM-619B37

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A medieval silver gilt pilgrim's badge commemorating St George. It shows St George on horseback with a sword in his right hand raised above his head. Beneath the feet of the horse lies the dragon. The badge has seen some wear, particularly on the face of the saint. On the reverse are traces of the stitching loop that would have affixed the badge to a hat or garment.

The cult of St George flourished in England, in the fifteenth century in particular, when pilgrims would visit St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle which held the relic of the saint's heart. The badge is silver, and dates from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century. Dimensions: height 25 mm, width 23 mm. Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996. J P Robinson Curator of Medieval Collections 19th October 2011
