A worn Medieval copper alloy Shield of France type jetton. The obverse has a Shield of France modern but with a cinquefoil or sexfoil placed in the centre of the three fleur de lis; the shield is also surmounted by a crown, a feature more generally seen with the multi-foil (more than three) Shield of France ancient. The reverse has a triple stranded cross fleuretty surrounded by a four-arched tressure, with a sexfoil and pellets in each of the spandrels. The obverse legend appears to read [A]+MARIA GRACIA+[PL]EN. The jetton was minted in Tournai and probably dates between 1400-1478 AD. The upper date is when Louis XI made a grant of the rose emblem to the city of Tournai, at which point the cross rosetty was introduced to jetton design. Similar jettons are shown in Mitchener; Jetons, Medalets and Tokens, The Medieval Period and Nuremberg; (1988) p224-231.
