Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Dolphin type and of 1st century AD date

The brooch is incomplete, missing the spring (with a length of 44.8mm, a depth of 16.6mm and a weight of 8.3g). The spring mechanism was secured by a rearward claw type arrangement, often seen on Dolphin type brooches, although the eroded wings (with a surviving width of 22.5mm) may have lost the terminals for a Polden Hill claw type arrangement. The rearward claw remains in place and the wings were decorated with vertical ribbing. The upper bow curves from the underside of the rear of the head, to become of low D-shaped section (with a thickness of 3.6mm) with straight sides converging to the foot (with a width at the head of 10.1mm). The bow is decorated with concave side sections flanking a midrib in sunken relief. The midrib is corroded but was enhanced with punched or incised notches and there is the suggestion of a small recessed cell at the head, in front of the claw. The decoration continues to the blunt foot. The catch-plate is damaged but appears to have been triangular and confined to the rear of the leg. The surface has a dark-brown patina, where it survives and elsewhere is pitted and pale-green.
