A Medieval to post-Medieval foot and part of the leg from a cast copper-alloy cooking vessel (c.1250-c.1650).
The object is sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross-section.
The front is divided by a prominent horizontal rib which is situated just past mid-way along its length from the top. Above and below this rib there is a central vertical rib and the lower rib is slightly larger in width and thickness. The base of the foot is flat and does not appear to be worn. At the top there is an old transverse break. The rear face is flat and even.
This object has no patina and is largely covered with green copper-alloy corrosion products. At the front, close to the top, there are two small patches of black substance which is probably consolidated soot.
53.9 x 24.4 x 12.9mm. Weight: 62.63g.
Cast cooking vessels seem to have come into use in the second half of the 13th century and to have continued at least until c. 1600 (Geake 2001, 52).
