Medieval copper alloy annular brooch, probably of 13th or 14th century date
The brooch frame is missing the pin and is of annular type (with a maximum diameter of 35.5mm an internal diameter of 24.0mm and a weight of 5.3g). The frame is of flat section (1.7mm thick and 5.6mm wide) with four integral raised panels (2.9 - 3.3mm thick). Each panel comprises a raised rib adjacent to a square panel sloping down (thinning) to another stepped rib, cut by a diagonal groove. The sloping panel is enhanced with rows of punched dots. The decorative panels are in opposed directions. The remainder of the frame is undecorated. There is a recess to accommodate the missing pin (2.5mm wide) with an oval narrowed bar (2.0mm wide and 1.5mm thick). There is no corresponding notch on the opposite side of the frame. The rear of the frame is flat and rough file marks are evident. The surface has a dark brown patina with areas of green surface damage.
