The handle takes the form a three-dimensional bust and is a typical example of its type. The facial features are worn, but the recessed circular eyes, protruding nose and flat mouth are visible. The figure wears a high-crested helmet. The neck is slender and extends into the shoulders and upper portion of the torso. Extending from the shoulder is a transverse slot and the remains of a iron tang from the handle. The reverse of the object is in good condition although some of the shoulder area is broken and missing from the lip that would have held the tang. A number of these Minerva spatula handles have been recorded on the database; Worrell (2003) and Crummy (2004) suggest a 2nd to early 3rd century date.2011-08-09 17:18:022019-09-27 17:27:513111992-01-011992-12-311Certain112121PAS4E415DBA0010567141BERKCopper alloy10627CastCompleteGoodROMANROx41218p0gjgrs69wsROMANROx41218p0gjgrs69wsMetal detectorCircaCirca440694388994163889941421SU4773SU4773SU47SE51.454038-1.3249782635077761003406412011194.jpg562Roman spatula: Minerva spatula handleOxfordshire County Council5images/abyard/South EastCharacter undeterminedCultivated landEuropean RegionUnitary AuthorityWest BerkshireUnitary AuthorityWest BerkshireCivil Parish51.4584-1.30639ChieveleyReturned to finder95295
