Roman copper alloy brooch of T-shaped type dating to the 1st or 2nd century AD

The brooch is incomplete, missing the pin, catch plate and foot. (surviving length of 30.2mm and a weight of 4.6g). The missing pin was hinged within tubular wings (with a total length of 13.1mm and width of 4.5mm). The wings are decorated with a groove and rib near the tips. An integral chain-loop extends vertically outwards from the top of the bow. The upper bow is of D-shaped section (width at head 8.4mm and a length of 20.8mm)) and with straight sides that converge slightly to a rounded button with knurled decoration. The bow has a stepped border on both sides. The bow is decorated with a raised diamond shaped moulding that has a central circular recessed cell. The diamond is flanked by two arched recessed cells. No enamel survives but the cells would have contained alternating coloured enamel. The brooch has a green patina with remnant traces of silvering or tinning on both the front and reverse of the bow.

T-shaped brooches tend to be very variable in form and decoration. The brooch corresponds with T-shaped types which have a distribution largely concentrated around the Lower Severn and outlined by Hattatt (1987, pp 100-103) and corresponds to Hull's type 108-111.
