Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Transitional Type 2/3, Group 2.b2, flat wing ends, Plate 45)and of 1st century AD date.
The brooch is fragmentary, represented by the head only (with a surviving length of 11.2mm and a weight of 4.4g). The brooch employed a spring mechanism, now lost, which was secured between perforated lugs at the ends of the semi-cylindrical wings (with a width of 36.4mm and a thickness of 3.7mm), in a Polden Hill type arrangement. At the top of the head is a stub, possibly from a hook to secure the chord or possibly from a chain-loop. The fronts of the wings are decorated with a pair of vertical lines flanking a rounded panel on each side, heavily worn in parts. The central area of the head is flat and appears the thin to the bow, where it has broken. The bow does not appear to have been angled from the head. The surface has a pale to mid-green patina.
