Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 5.c, flat wing ends type, Western Group), type and of 1st or 2nd century AD date.
The brooch is incomplete, missing the leg and pin (with a surviving length of 26.5mm, a surviving depth of 14.2mm and a weight of 7.7g). Half of the spring remains in place, around a copper alloy axis bar and secured between perforated end lugs and the chord tensioned through a lug at the head (Polden Hill lug type arrangement). The ends of the wings are elliptical and are angled inwards slightly (with a wing width of 25.3mm). The wings are decorated near the ends with two vertical grooves each side. The lug on the head develops into a quickly weakening midrib in sunken relief and flanked by a V-shaped moulding. The V-moulding was enhanced with a punched dot border and notches at the apex. The sides of the upper bow have a ribbed border (with a width of 8.3mm and a thickness of 3.4mm), which is stepped to the mid-bow. The mid bow is of D-shaped section, with straight sides converging towards the break (3.8mm wide and 2.9mm thick). The mid-bow section has no decoration. The surface now has a dark brown colour after a recently applied oily coating.
