Lead alloy pilgrim badge fragment. Cast discoid badge with openwork border comprising a cabled circumference separated from the central plate by a series of pellets of which three remain. A mould line runs across the back. The central plate depicts the bearded face of Christ in low relief, as this image was captured on the cloth with which Veronica, a woman of Jerusalem, wiped His face as He carried the Cross to Calvary. This relic, known as the Vernicle in England, was paraded in Rome from 1208 annually, and from the 14th century was exhibited there weekly. By 1450 its cult was very widespread, as devotion to an image (of what was itself a miraculous image) was deemed as efficacious as contact with the original item. The naturalistic style suggests a 15th-century date. Suggested date: Late Medieval, 1400-1500.

Diameter (estimated): 32mm, Thickness: 3mm, Weight: 2.89g.

Class: Vernicle
