Roman copper alloy strap fitting
The fitting is near-complete, missing some of the periphery (with a length of 45.1mm, a surviving width of 24.6mm and a weight of 31.9g). The fitting comprises a large central prominent rib (10mm high and giving the fitting an overall depth of 34.4mm) flanked on each side by a slightly smaller rib (5mm high) and separated by rounded channels (6mm wide). Each of the ribs is enhanced with a stepped border at the top. The base off the fitting has a flaring skirt, much of the periphery of which has been lost. A single convex strap was used to secure the fitting, now corroded but originally probably of sub-rectangular section (7.0mm wide and 4.4mm thick). The interior of the fitting is hollow, with adhering burnt deposits, possibly surviving from the casting. The exterior surface has a dark-green patina with areas of pale-green surface loss.
The fitting is difficult to parallel, although the form would seem to suggest a strap fitting, possibly from a harness or similar.
