An incomplete cast copper alloy annular brooch frame, probably dating to the Medieval period. The brooch frame is of an open annular plan, with a recessed notch to hold the pin mechanism. It is possible to see both traces of where the pin would have originally rested and preferential wear slightly off from that position where the pin continuously wore away at the surface of the brooch. It measures 25.97 mm diameter, 2.78 mm thick and weighs 3.73 grams.
Although annular rings were also used as buckles, the identification of a constriction point for the pin has been suggested as a positive identifying feature of annular brooches from the Medieval period, in contrast to buckles, which allowed the pin to move freely around the perimeter of the ring (Egan and Pritchard 2002, p248). Cf. Egan and Pritchard 2002, Fig. 160, No. 1307, dating to c. 1350-1400 AD.
