One half of a cast copper alloy two part saddle pommel dating from the post-medieval period, i.e. c. AD1500-1700. Only part of the main body is present. The pommel is semi-circular in section with one solid semicircular end and one open end. At the open end, half of the opening is straight and at right angles to the side the other half is curved, cutting down into the side along half its lengh. The obverse of the pommel is decorated with moulded parallel lines/grooves; the reverse is plain. It would have had two small wings (now missing) on either side of the top, with rivet holes in to attach the pommel to the leather of the saddle. These pommels are thought to date to the 16th or 17th century and a complete example is illustrated in Read (1988) page 84, No.4.
