A complete cast copper alloy decorative stud, probably from a medieval book. The head of the stud is a eight-point star (octofoil) which is domed in profile with a flattened top. The surface has eight triangular ridges. The underside of the head is hollow with a central integral circular sectioned stud. The stud tapers to a blunt broken point. The break is not recent.
The stud is a mid to dark green colour, with an even surface patina.
The head measures 21.86mm in length and 23.26mm wide. The depth of the head and the shank is 20.92mm. It weighs 9.4g.
A couple of similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database: SWYOR-50F611, WAW-739802, and WAW-78D247. Although they are very large and heavy for book mounts, and have strikingly long attachment spikes which seem incompatible with attachment to book covers, there are plenty still in place on bindings; see, for instance, a book with a similar mount in place on the binding in the British Library (Add MS 63077; http://www.bl.uk/manuscripts/Viewer.aspx?ref=add_ms_63077_fs001r). This binding dates to the second half of the 12th century and was produced at the Cistercian abbey of Rievaulx in North Yorkshire.
