Medieval copper alloy harness pendant, probably of late 13th or 14th century date
The harness pendant is shield-shaped, with a straight top and curving convex side edges. It is complete, with an overall length of 31.4mm and a weight of 5.4g. The loop is perpendicular to the axis of the pendant and has an original angled-forward projection (with a length of 10mm, a depth of 6.2mm, a thickness of 1.9 - 3.5mm and has an internal diameter of 1.7mm). The shield-shaped pendant (16.1mm wide and 21.8mm long, 3.1mm thick) is near flat (very slightly convex) across both its length and width.
The heraldic device on the shield comprises a diagonal cross (saltire) in decayed enamel, perhaps originally red (gules). The fields surrounding the cross are infilled with blue (azure) enamel. At the top of the shield is a horizontal band (chief), probably gilt (or), now corroded. The surface has a green to brown patina.
