An irregular fragment of lead alloy casting waste, of uncertain dating, but possibly Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval (1400 - 1800 AD).
The casting waste fragment consists is sub circular in plan, with uneven, almost bubbly surfaces. It is sub rectangular in cross section. The upper surface exhibits a large number of casting flaws or air bubbles. The lower surface is flat, and has a faint spiral design.
It is a mid grey colour, with an even surface patina.
It measures 28.03mm in length, 27.22mm wide and 8.01mm thick. It weighs 14.1 grams.
Fragments of casting waste like this one are hard to date confidentially. It is possible that it is part of the waste from the production of cast copper alloy cooking vessels, and therefore could be Late Medieval to Post Medieval dating (1400 to 1800 AD), but it could date to an earlier or later period. Scientific analysis of the elemental composition of the copper alloy would allow a more accurate date to be suggested.
