An incomplete cast copper alloy catch plate fragment from a Trumpet style brooch, of Roman (75 to 175 AD) dating.
The catch plate fragment consists of the base of the bow and part of the triangular catch plate behind it. It is rectangular in plan, and irregular in profile.
The catch plate is a mid to dark green colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of surface detail.
The catch plate measures 25.87mm in length, 6.83mm wide and 10.58mm thick. It weighs 4.2 grams.
This brooch fragment was found in the same field as an earlier recorded Trumpet brooch (LVPL-D978D8) find by the same finder, and the width of the bow at the top of the catch plate fragment is similar to that of at the base of the previously recorded brooch. It is reasonable to assume that they were originally part of the same brooch.
