A complete wrought iron rectangular buckle frame and pin, of probable Medieval to Post Medieval dating (1400 - 1600 AD).

The buckle frame is sub rectangular in plan, and rectangular in profile. The outside edge is slightly curved. The pin is sub rectangular, with a tapering tip, and appears to have been wrapped around the strap bar.

The buckle is a mid to dark reddish brown in colour, with an even surface patina. The buckle is covered with a layer of iron corrosion (rust), which has resulted in a loss of surface detail. The corrosion layer appears to be relatively stable and not laminating. To reduce the risk of any laminations or active corrosion from occurring, the buckle frame should be stored in a dry, moisture free environment, such as a sealed, air tight tupperware box with acid free tissue and silica gel.

The buckle measures 39.47mm in length, 44.94mm wide and 13.88mm thick. It weighs 24.8 grams.

This buckle frame is similar to late Medieval and Post-Medieval examples noted in London (Egan, 1991, p95, #430; Egan, 2005, p36 #98), as well as Post-Medieval examples from Norwich (Margeson, 1993: no. 204). These indicate a possible 15th-17th century AD date for the current example, although a later date cannot be ruled out entirely.
