Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 5.c, flat wing ends type, Western Group) of 1st -2nd century AD date.
The brooch is fragmentary and is represented by the head only (with a surviving length of 28.3mm, a surviving depth of 11.4mm and a weight of 9.1g). The brooch employed a spring mechanism, secured by perforated lugs at the ends of the wings (Polden Hill type arrangement). A perforated lug above the head, now broken tensioned the chord. Only one of the wings survives (with a surviving width of 24.4mm) and has an expanded terminal (7.1mm diameter) and a decorative vertical notched rib, flanked by grooves midway along the wing. The upper bow has stepped mouldings on the sides (giving the bow a width at the head of 12.0mm) and is of D-shaped section (with a thickness of 4.8mm). Beneath the side mouldings the bow is of oval section, with straight sides converging to the break. The lug above the head continues as a V-shaped moulding is flanked by a less prominent V-shaped moulding. No decoration is now evident lower on the bow. The brooch has a pale green patina.
The brooch corresponds with Hull's type 103, as defined by Hattatt (1987, p 100-104) , with a distribution centred around the Lower Severn.
