A complete cast copper alloy strap fitting of probable Post Medieval date (1550-1700). The fitting consists of a single plate with integral cast spike on the reverse. The plate is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with expanded rounded terminals and a narrowing or constriction in the middle (being bone shaped). In cross section it is rectangular, and the edges are slightly facetted / bevelled. On the upper edge of one end is a slight rounded knop, the reverse of this extends into a sub-rectangular spike which is bent and broken at one end. There is no evidence for a second spike on the other end as commonly seen in this type of strap fitting. The reverse is flat and plain. The front face is decorated with a cast and incised design; this consists of debased foliate C shaped scrolls forming an interlaced design (possibly two hearts each with a fleur-de-lis within) at the mid point. There is no evidence of a black coloured niello inlay, although the design still has soil within it. The strap fitting is a mid green colour with a well formed and relatively even patina. This has eroded in places - specifically the reverse - and a purplish coloured metal corrosion is visible. A very similar example with identical decoration is recorded on the PAS database from Wellington, Herefordshire (HESH-E2C377). The wellington example is part of a hinged two part strap fitting and does not have the integral reverse spike seen in here. The close similarity in form and decoration may suggest that they are from a similar set of strap fittings, possibly personal dress accessories / belt mounts. The design and shape of these plates are very similar to those known from Post Medieval (17th century) sword belt mounts, hangers and scabbard plates.

The fitting measures 26.0mm length 12.4mm width, is 1.6mm thick across the plate. The spike projects 6.5mm and is 2.8mm wide and 1.2mm thick. The fitting weighs 1.92 grams.
