A Late Medieval/ Early Post-Medieval (1450-1600) copper alloy chafing dish handle and attachment lug. Together, they measure 61.15mm in length and weigh 42.2g.

The handle measures 46.26x57.99mm and has a sub-trapezoid frame in plan, with the longer edge, opposite the attachment lug, shaped into a double curve with central indent like a heart. In cross-section the frame is square with bevelled corners giving it a hexagon shape and its maximum dimensions at the top of the flaring sides is 6.9x6.34mm.

The attachment lug is oval in shape with a collar at one end and a short stubby rivet beyond. Grooves at either side emphasise the collar. It measures 24.79x16.05x9.40mm and has a central piercing for the frame c.7mm in diameter.

Where the patina survives file marks are visible on both frame and lug.

Chafing dishes were domestic utensils made of metal or earthenware for holding burning charcoal or other combustible material. This was then used to cook food or keep it hot at the table.
