A worn and corroded 17th century copper alloy farthing traders token issued by John Gittings a Vintner of Chichester. The obverse has a star initial mark and the legend IOHN GITTINGS with the Vintners' arms in the centre. The reverse has the legend IN CHICHESTER with the initials I G in the centre of the flan. The token is undated and is listed in Williamson,Trade Tokens of the 17th Century vol II (1891) p1166, No.45. It also features in Kerridge, The Tokens Metallic Tickets Checks and Passes of West Sussex 1650-1950 (2009) p44/5.
Notes:
The issuer lived in North Street and was a Vintner. He married Catorn Comber on 1st November 1636 at St Bartholomews in Chichester.
