Medieval lead seal matrix, probably of 13th to 14th century date
The seal matrix is circular (with a diameter of 26.9mm and a weight of 15.5g). The rear of the matrix has a loop near the apex on the rear (11.0mm long, 4.3mm thick, 7.8mm deep and giving the matrix an overall depth of 10.6mm). The loop has a circular perforation 2.3mm diameter). The seal die has a central device depicting a bird in side profile facing to the right; the bird is perching on a branch. The encircling legend is now difficult to discern because of edge damage, but appears to read:
: S' . W I LL . B E M V H [A]
Seal of William Bemuha
There is a small irregular perforation (1.2mm across) near the base of the die, possibly deliberate.
Inscription:
: S' . WILL . B E MVH [A]
