Medieval copper alloy harness pendant, probably of late 13th or 14th century date
The harness pendant is shield-shaped, with a straight top and slightly convex side edges. It is complete, with an overall length of 44.0mm, width of 26.7mm and a weight of 11.0g. The loop is at right angles to the pendant and has a length of 11mm, a depth of 7.5mm, with a thickness of 2.9 - 4.9mm near the pendant and an internal diameter of 2mm. The pendant without the loop is 34.2mm long and 3.5mm thick; it is slightly convex across both its length and width.
The heraldic device on the shield comprises a broad central horizontal bar (fess); above the fess is a row of three crosses with rounded trefoil terminals (bottony). Beneath the fess are another three bottony crosses, arranged with a row of two above a central single cross. Red enamel survives in both fields above and below the fess, surrounding the crosses. The raised fess and crosses have traces of gilding surviving on their surfaces: Gules a fess between six crosses crosslet (3,2,1) Or (Beauchamp). The surface has a bright green patina and elsewhere is brown.
