A cast copper-alloy impersonal medieval seal matrix of 14th century date. The seal matrix is flat and circular in plan with an integrally cast suspension loop on the reverse which is situated to correspond with the initial cross at the start of the legend on the obverse. The obverse legend reads + CREDE MICHI, which translates from Latin as 'believe/trust in me'. The legend has an external border and an internal border which separates it from the central device which depicts two equally sized birds facing one another with a heart in between. Two groups of three pellets follow the legend. CREDE MICHI is a popular legend on seal matrices of medieval date, and corresponds with a variety of designs; the legend is not exclusively associated with the two birds. The seal matrix measures 19.8 mm in diameter, 2.99 mm thick and weighs 5.6 grams. It is well executed and survives well, with minimal wear. It has a very dark green patina.
