The weight has a circular rim, c. 2.6mm thick, decorated with nineteen punched dots, fairly evenly spaced. The internal base has a finely incised cross across it. The sides are shallowly bevelled, with the rim slightly wider than the base. The lower surface of the base is slightly rounded and features numerous file marks. The exterior of the sides are covered in diagonal file marks as well. The weight has a mass of 13.87g which approximates to a half ounce avoirdupois (14.2g), given wear and original inaccuracy. The artefact is of a dull grey/green colour with patches of off-white corrosion product. Similar examples can be found illustrated in Saunders (2001, 125, 130; fig. 43) which are dated to the 13th and the 14th centuries.Cup weights were used to weigh gold and silver as scrap metal or coins, and other precious material.2011-06-03 16:15:362011-06-07 16:05:00412011-04-091Certain4429PAS4DE8FA9600174E7141HAMPCopper alloy10627CastCompleteMEDIEVALMDx14221p0gjgrsxwzxMetal detectorExactlyExactly42916917765177661775441421SU4334SU4334SU43SW51.103695-1.38722217232810331104HAMP-8FA964cupweight.JPG727Medieval cup weightWinchester Museums Service5images/rwebley/South East141Weekend Wanderers - Crawley (09/04/11)2011-04-092011-04-09Cultivated landEuropean RegionCountyHampshireDistrictWinchesterCivil Parish51.1073-1.39841CrawleyReturned to finder95324
