An incomplete cast, enamelled and silvered (or tinned) disc brooch of Roman date (AD 80 - 250), missing some of the enamel decoration and most of the silvering, part of the D-shape lug and the spring and pin. The curl of the catchplate is damaged but still in place, as is part of the edge. The brooch measures 21.12mm in diameter, is 5.41mm in max. depth and weighs 4.2g.
The brooch is flat (2.26mm thick) and circular and decorated with a six-pointed star around a single copper alloy pellet. At each star point is a copper alloy pellet. The area between the star and the outside edge (flanked by a c.1mm wide copper alloy border) carries a blue enamel, mostly of a light shade but varying in its intensity of colour. About a third of the enamel is missing. The area inside the star carries white enamel, again missing about one third.
To the reverse are the remains of the lug (about half, broken across the piercing) with traces of iron staining, and the catchplate opposite.
Cf. Hattatt 2007 p.344, fig.203, nos.118, 518, 1409. In Roman Brooch Timeline (2007), Worrell dates flat enamelled disc brooches to AD 80-250.
