A complete post-Medieval cast copper-alloy stud (c. 1500-c. 1600).
In plan, this stud has a circular domed head with moulded decoration on the front face. There is an integrally cast shank on the rear. Decoration at the front consists of a central raised pellet, surrounded by a beaded border. It is surrounded by six similar and evenly spaced pellets, each with a beaded border. Some pellets are just visible. The back of the head is slightly convex and undecorated. The attachment shank is bent, square in cross-section and tapers to a point.
The stud is a light drab brown colour and has a small fleck of mid-green patina at the front. It has become worn while in the soil and has light green copper-alloy corrosion products.
Maximum diameter of head: 17.5mm; thickness of head 3.3mm. The shank has a length of 8.4mm and measures 1.8 x 1.8mm beneath the head. Weight: 2.17g.
Similar studs have been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database. For example, see finds from: Worlington Parish, Suffolk (SF-2D65A2); Chester Parish, Chester (LVPL-DD1656) and Niton and Whitwell Parish, Isle of Wight (IOW-216221).
