A complete cast copper alloy chafing dish handle, of Post Medieval dating (16th to 17th Centuries AD).

The handle is hexagonal in plan, with three opposing straight sides and three opposing inward curving (concave) sides. The cross section of the handle is rectangular. Neither side of the handle exhibits signs of decoration.

The handle is a mid to dark green colour, with an even surface patina.

It measures 54.09mm in length, 62.25mm wide and 4.83mm thick. The frame of the handle is 7.73mm wide. It weighs 35.3 grams.

This handle would have been attached to the body of the chafing dish by a rounded lug such as LVPL-533411. Chafing dishes were domestic utensils made of metal or earthenware for holding burning charcoal or other combustible material. This was then used to cook food or keep it hot at the table. It is similar in style to that found on a Type D1 chafing dish, dated to the 16th Centuries AD (Lewis, 1973).
