BROOCH

Unique ID: WMID-CCF6C8

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A cast copper-alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill type (flat wing ends type, West Midlands), incomplete and in fairly poor condition. The brooch has semi-cylindrical wings (though one is missing) with pierced circular end plates and moulded decoration above, allowing identification of it as of Polden Hill type, dating from the late first to second century AD. The head is curved and narrows towards the bow, most of which is missing. The spring mechanism is also missing. A rib of decoration runs from the head down what remains of the bow. The incomplete brooch measures 20.7 mm long, 14.35 mm wide at the wings, 10.55 mm thick at the head and weighs 4.2 grams. The brooch has a brown patina, with areas of green copper corrosion at the breaks, suggesting that these have occurred relatively recently, possibly through plough action.

Class: Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4.k, flat wing ends type)
