A struck/hammered copper alloy jetton of Charles V (1364-1380 AD) or Charles VI (1380-1422), struck in Tournai, France between 1373 and 1415.

The jetton consists of a Chatel Tournois jetton, one of the jetton issues that alluded to the French provinces, struck principally between the French reconquests of 1373 and the anarchy following the battle of Agincourt in 1415.

The obverse depicts the Chatel Tournois accosted with a lis or lys either side. The obverse legend reads: +IE SVI DE LATON BE (Translation: I am of handsome latton). The reverse depicts a triple stranded straight cross fleuretty within a 4 arched tressure. The reverse legend reads +AVI. The die axis is 12 o'clock.

The jetton is a dark green colour and is in good condition, suffering from little abrasion.

It has a diameter of 24.36mm and is 1.54mm thick. It weighs 4.6 grams.

This jetton is similar to that published as #513 (Mitchiner, 1988, p189), although the reverse legend is slightly different (+AVI as opposed to +AVE) and is slightly heavier. However it bears the same obverse legend and design, and reverse design. This style of provinical issue French jettons is considered to date to between 1373 and 1415, although the Chatel Tournois style design was a popular one and it continued to appear on both 15th Century royal jettons and on stock issues that were mass produced, mainly at Tournai (Tours).
