An Early Saxon copper alloy brooch in the form of a stylised bird in profile, with a raptor-like hooked beak, blind hole for the eye, collared neck, a folded wing along the back and an incomplete crescent moulding for the foot. The collar, edge of the wing, and foot are decorated with stamped annulets, and traces of an engraved line along the edge of the body can be seen. There is a also a groove dividing the upper and lower parts of the beak. The tail, and either end of the crescent moulding, are missing. On the reverse, just before the break at the tail, is a single pin lug retaining a fragment of highly corroded iron pin, and an incomplete rectangular catch-plate with traces of iron corrosion to one side. The surviving length is 37mm and the width is 18mm. For examples of a generally similar form, see MacGregor (1997, 145, no.70.3 and 70.4). This example dates from the 5th - 6th century.
