An incomplete Early-medieval silver penny of Edward the Confessor (AD 1042-1066). 'Pointed Helmet' type struck between AD 1053-1056. The lower third of the coin is broken and missing so part of the legend on each face has been lost. The remaining letters on the reverse suggest the moneyer was Ægelman in Bedford. North 825, BMC vii, Hild.F.
Notes:
This is one of two Edward the Confessor coins found within six foot of each other "In the same ploughline". The other coin is recorded as BERK-B859A7. As these two coins are of silver, date to the same period and were found within close proximity it is likely that they represent a purse-drop. Therefore they may be considered to be from the same episode of deposition and as such would qualify as treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
